Playing with shapes and colors was one of the maxims of creative work at the Bauhaus. Alma Siedhoff-Buscher took this quite literally when designing the Little Shipbuilding Game toy. The building game itself can be anything. Through the child's imagination it becomes a ship, a mountain, a valley railway, a gate or an animal, as Siedhoff-Buscher later wrote.
The building game was designed as part of the design of a children's room in the Haus am Horn for the large Bauhaus exhibition in 1923. At this time, Siedhoff-Buscher was working in the Bauhaus Weimar wood sculpture workshop.
In addition to other toys, Alma Siedhoff-Buscher has created a painting guide and kindergarten furniture, among other things. The furniture in particular was far ahead of its time in its multifunctionality.
The iconic building game has been available as a re-edition since 1977. Today it is manufactured under the seal of the Bauhaus Archive Berlin by the NAEF manufacturer in Switzerland.
